Pradaxa – Blood Thinner – Dangerous Drug

Pradaxa Injuries Include Heart Attacks, Strokes, Internal Bleeding, & Wrongful Deaths

Pradaxa, also known as Dabigatran, is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. Pradaxa was originally approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010. It is often used as a replacement to the blood thinner Coumadin. Pradaxa is a blood thinner medicine that lowers the chance of blood clots forming in your body. It is an anticoagulant medication used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common type of heart rhythm abnormality.

Atrial fibrillation, which affects more than 2 million Americans, involves very fast and uncoordinated contractions of the heart’s two upper heart chambers (atria) and is one of the most common types of abnormal heart rhythm.

The Dangers of Pradaxa Dangers

The FDA is investigating an unusually large number of reports of serious bleeding linked to the drug. Boehringer Ingelheim has acknowledged approximately 260 deaths related to the used of Pradaxa. According to a Cleveland Clinic report, patients taking the new anti-clotting drug Pradaxa have a 33% higher risk of heart attack or severe symptoms of heart disease than do patients taking warfarin.

Pradaxa has no effective reversal agent. For those taking Coumadin (warfarin), an effective reversal agent exists. Packed red blood cells or vitamin K delivered in an emergent manner allows doctors to control the bleeding and to perform emergency surgery.

You are at higher risk of bleeding if you are over 75 years old, have kidney problems, have stomach or intestine bleeding that is recent or keeps coming back, have a stomach ulcer, or if you take other medications that increase your risk of bleeding, including aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), warfarin sodium (Coumadin, Jantoven), or medicines that contain heparin.

Pradaxa Side Effects May Include:

  • Death from severe or excessive bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Stomach pain (ulcers, nausea, heartburn, bloating)
  • Kidney failure (kidney bleeding)
  • Hemorrhagic stroke cerebral hemorrhage
  • Heart attack
  • Brain hemorrhaging

If you or a loved one took Pradaxa and suffered side effects (severe bleeding event requiring hospitalization, a heart attack, or death), please contact us online or call (954) 504-6577 to learn more during a free, confidential consultation.
