For some months now, the anticoagulation medication Xarelto (also known by the generic name rivaroxaban) has been linked with serious and deadly side effects including uncontrollable bleeding that doctors have faced great difficulty in bringing to a halt. The drug was approved back in 2011, and marketed by a Johnson and Johnson subsidiary and Bayer Healthcare AG for three main indications:
- deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- strokes and blood clots in patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (afib)
- blood clot risks in patients having hip or knee replacement surgery
Anticoagulants are designed to interrupt the body’s normal blood clotting process in individuals who are at risk for developing clots even when they are uninjured. Such clots could lodge themselves in the legs, lungs, and/or brain and bring about death if they are left untreated.
While the mission of Xarelto is a necessary and admirable one, its side effects have proved both dangerous and deadly.
