The FDA has issued a Class I recall notice indicating that “[u]se of these devices may cause serious injuries or death.” There has been at least one death attributed to a faulty Medtronic insulin pump and over 2,100 injuries.
These two models of Medtronic insulin pump are designed to deliver a precise amount of insulin directly into the bloodstream to keep the glucose levels regulated 24 hours a day. With the 630G and 670G, the retainer rings which are supposed to help seal the system from the insulin reservoir until the insulin enters the body have been defective and breaking. This prevents the device from working properly.
The problem is that users do not know that the small ring is broken so they continue to use and trust the pump. Two major consequences have been seen with a broken retainer ring and a malfunctioning pump.
First, too much insulin may be given to the user. Excess amounts of insulin can cause blood sugar to drop to dangerously low levels. Some of the symptoms of too much insulin are:
