Florida Fosamax Attorney

Florida Osteoporosis Drug Attorneys

Fosamax (alendronate sodium) is a bisphosphonate manufactured by Merck and is commonly prescribed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis (bone loss) and other bone-related diseases. According to the FDA, doctors wrote more than 150 million prescriptions for bisphosphonates between 2005 and 2009.

Fosamax was heavily marketed to millions of consumers, especially women going through menopause, after its introduction in 1999. Today, more than 10 million Americans over the age of 50 have osteoporosis and another 34 million have low bone mass.

FDA Issues Warning on Bone Drugs

There is now mounting evidence that for some women who have taken Fosamax or its generic, alendronate, for more than five years could suffer from spontaneous fractures. According to an FDA report published on May 9, 2012, in the New England Journal of Medicine, bone-strengthening drugs such as Fosamax may have little long-term benefit. New labels and medication guides are needed to share these new warnings on oral drugs, which impact not only Fosamax, but Actonel, Atelvia, Boniva, and injectible drugs, including Boniva and Reclast and their generic equivalents.

Fosamax Side Effects

Even though the femur is considered one of the strongest bones in the body, patients who have taken Fosamax have experienced femur fractures and broken bones from doing little more than taking a walk, walking down steps, or doing low-energy exercises. Side affect of taking Fosamax may include:

  • Femur fractures (thigh bone fractures or long-bone fractures)
  • Osteonecrosis (ONJ) of the jaw/dead jaw syndrome (infection and eventual rotting of the jawbone)
  • Esophageal disorders (cancer due to irritation of the esophagus)
  • Abnormal heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation)
  • Bone, joint, and muscle pain and swelling

If you or a loved one took Fosamax and suffered a femur fracture or broken bones, please contact Zimmerman & Frachtman by calling (954) 504-6577. Our experienced experienced defective drug and personal injury law firm offers free consultations and charge you only if we win your case.
